Photo to Abstract Expressionist Image

In this tutorial, we’re going to take a photograph and turn it into an image resembling an expressionist style painting. This technique works best on photos comprised of simple shapes and colors, like this bowl of fruit, for instance.

To start off, we need to create three duplicates of our background layer, so hit Ctrl+J 3 times. Go back to the Layers palette and name these layers, from the top one down, “line,” “shape,” and “texture.” Now click on the eye next to the thumbnail for the “shape” and “line” layers to hide them.

Select your texture layer and go to Image – Adjust – Channel Mixer. Check the box for “Monochrome” and hit OK.

Now that you’ve done this, go up to Filter – Texture – Texturizer and apply the following settings.
