Creating a Worms Worm

In this tutorial we’re going to create a cartoon worm from the popular Team17 Worms games. I love these guys. They’re so cute and violent. Let’s get started.

First, create a new document, with a new layer. Call it “body” and grab your pen tool. We’ll need to create the outline of the worm’s body. I can illustrate this a lot easier than I can explain it, so check out the animation below.

Now Ctrl+Click on the path in the Paths palette to load the selection. Fill it with #a36b52. I also gave it a 1px black stroke, just to make it stand out a bit.

Now create another new layer called “highlights” and get your pen tool again. This time, we need to draw some shapes for the lighter portions of the worm. We’ll start with the head.

Now the main part of the body.

And finally the bottom half of the body.

Now go back to the Paths palette and Ctrl+Click on the work path again to load the selection. This time feel it with #f4bb9e.
