Create A USB Thumb Drive

Now all we’re lacking is the USB plug, arguably, the most important part! This time, create a new layer and put it below your base layer. Make a 50×50px square filled with light gray (#d7d7d7) and place it so that it is centered vertically with your base layer and then move it over so that it extends 40px to the left of your base layer, leaving a 10px overlap that is below your base.

Copy and paste the layer style from your base layer to this layer as you did above for the indicator light. Now double click on the layer styles icon for the plug layer to edit it and remove the “Bevel and Emboss” effect and click “OK”.

Now we’re almost done. We just have two things left that we need to do. First off, create another new layer below the plug layer. Ctrl+Click on the plug layer to load the selection and fill the new layer with a darker grey (#888888). Now go back to the plug layer and delete two small rectangles about 4px x 3px near the end of the plug.

Finally, make a new layer between the plug and base layers. Ctrl+Click on the plug layer to load the selection and fill it with black. Now take your rectangular marquee tool and select all of the visible area on this layer. It’s important that your selection extend past the edges of the black square on the top, bottom and left sides. On the right side, the edge of the selection should be right against the edge of the base layer.

Hit Ctrl+Alt+D to feather the selection, enter a value of 5, click “Ok” and then hit delete. This will create the shadow cast onto the plug layer by the base layer, finishing off your drive.

If you wish, you can also create a cap for the drive using the same technique we used to create the base layer.
